1991 D150 2 wheel drive, 318 and 4 speed automatic. the speedometer hand will go to 100 or to the peg when barely moving. when this happens the odometer is flying as well. not a fast driver but super annoying to see the miles run up evry few second as this is a cherry truck with only 75,000 actual miles on it. any ideas to correct this would be helpful, thanks in advance

I believe the issue is in the speedo head, it still uses a speedo cable doesn't it?

Not sure what would be causing the odometer to read fast. It's all gear driven. Unlike the speedometer that operates more or less off centrifugal force. This is assuming it is still all cable drive and not an electrical drive unit.
It's not that hard to take out and take apart.
I would find a speedometer shop and have them look at it.

as stated above, this is an electronic unit. first thing I did was replace the speed sensor on the tranny to no avail. researching other forums and you tube for possibilities.

The speedo head is a common problem for the last few years of that body style. As popular as they are getting now I'd be surprised if there isn't a place making replacements or rebuilding them.

thanks for all the replies and glad to say I finally got it fixed. A huge thank you and many cudos to Southeastern Electronics in Roanoke Va. I spoke with a rep from their company and he assured if they could not fix it there was no charge. Took the dash cluster out, mailed it to them, received a message when it arrived, received another the next day saying the repairs were completed, the problems they found and fixed, then told me the same price as the estimate, I paid them and received it 2 days later postage paid by them. After reinstalling the unit a road test proved all A-OK with it.

It sounds like you have an issue with the speedometer and odometer.

The most likely cause is a faulty speedometer cable or a bad speedometer gear. The speedometer cable connects to the vehicle's transmission and drives both the speedometer and odometer. If the cable is damaged or the gear is worn, it can cause erratic readings.

Here are some steps you can take:

Check the speedometer cable: Look for any visible damage or wear. If it's broken or frayed, it needs to be replaced.

Inspect the speedometer gear: The gear that drives the speedometer is in the transmission. If it's damaged or worn, it can cause the problem. You might need to remove the instrument cluster to inspect it.

Check the instrument cluster: If the cable and gear are fine, the issue could be with the instrument cluster itself, like a malfunctioning needle or a wiring issue.

Fixing or replacing the faulty parts should stop the speedometer and odometer from going haywire.

Let me know if you need more help!

Dam can't people read. Not to sound down on anyone. But when the problem has been solved what is the point of acting know it all. So if your just reading the first post and then replying it may not hurt to read the rest first before looking foolish.
Ok I'm done.
