I'm a geological exploration field assistant. I read a lot of P.J.O'Rourke, and I think we should be building vehicles the way we were in America in the 1960s. More torque and lower ratio diffs. I think leaf springs, drum brakes, large low stress steel engines make sense. Maybe underdash aircon, it's a bit warm in central Queensland .
Bring back high profile tyres. Build full size Plymouths again. Make hoods or bonnets longer. Consider straight eights. Let Labradors ride on the back. I think everyone should try wilderness geological exploration at least once in their life. Who knows, we may even decide we would like to resurrect the Space Shuttle program again.

I broached the topic of straight eights because I've been looking at old photos of long hooded ambulances, and trucks and cars, and then I was looking under the hood of my own cars, ( V6 3.8 cast iron Buick engine Aussie Holden Statesman ( chevy caprice ) and my brothers V8 sedan and wagon, and I thought, longer hoods or bonnets would provide greater crumple zones, and straight configuration engines usually have more main bearings , which I thought should extend engine life. Sorry for the wrong brand example, it's probably miles off topic. There's plenty of '70s -ish Dodge trucks for sale in Australia, in running condition from as low as $900. So I think I'll have one next. there's a '70 crane truck, for AUD $3500, with a 4 ton capacity crane on the back, all working.

Welcome aboard from NJ USA Johnno! I'd love to try wilderness geological exploration. All that's needed is someone to buy my house in NJ and leave me enough to move! LOL

hi back ! As near as I can figure as long as people keep shopping in a big way , there will always be jobs in geological exploration. Right now there are about 1000 on the job boards in Australia . So please live it up as best you can !

I am a tad too old to think about any new careers. Although mattress testing and beer tasting might be some things I could handle. For some reason, I have always been fascinated with the insides of my eyelids!Working these rotating shifts is literally killing me. I am at work right now but I am sure it's day time over there. In fact I have to do some work before I forget how. Enjoy your day!

Welcome Johnno from across the ditch in New Zealand. :)

You talk about returning to the days of long hoods to give better crumple zones....I guess that's me in serious trouble....
