Chicken coop

So there seemed to be interest in my chicken coop I have been building. So I thought I'd share my progress. Thank you for all of the suggestions and tips. I appreciate them all. Ok to get to the project. The idea of the project was to build a coop/run combo as inexpensively as possible without sacrificing looks or functionality. I was given a some lumber and had some left over from projects also had some left over hardware.

To the point of the first picture I had only spent $40. At the point of the last pictures I'm guessing about another $60 has been spent.

I'm planning to put dividers in the little side extension. That whole roof portion opens up for collecting eggs. I just had to get them in there they outgrew their box in the garage.
 
looks great , my bud put his high off the ground and put a ramp so the chickens can go up and down . free of hunters . caged in the lower section with heavy duty 1/2 '' square mesh wire . hes on a hill side in the ruff . off the grid you know . its a great place to spend the day with a view .

That's where I'd expect to find them and that roof section lifting is fairly typical of this style henhouse. Of course they'll lay 'em most anywhere but they seem to prefer some privacy. Sounds like you're all over it........
 
Got a little more work done on the coop. Thought I had taken a picture of it all painted but I guess I didn't. So I think all I have to do is get the dividers for the nesting boxes built and installed and get the run covered in wire.

Those chickens should be big enough to really enjoy that. Only thing now would be is how portable is it? Just in case they wear the turf out and would make spreading the fertilizer around easier. That is if you have the space.
I have a big yard and letting them scratch a few days in one spot and then moving them would not be a problem. But not everyone has that option.
 
My old neighbors just opened the coop and let them roam. Only 3, same breed, would come over to our yard and hide under the trailers when we were out. All would go back inside at dusk.

i hope they enjoy iv'e sure spent a lot of time on it. No this one isn't really portable. i figured we would just let them out to roam the fenced yard when we are home as often as we can or i have seen some tractors made out of PVC pipe. that may be an option if they try to get out of the yard.

That's what i'm hoping. i I just dont know if they will stay in my yard or not and if they don't there is a good chance they wont come back. we have a lot of dogs and cats in our neighborhood.
 
We had a wolf/hybrid, scared the horses from 100 yards away when I'd take her for a walk, chases every critter outside and catches more than you'd think. But she was mellow and never messed with the chickens. She'd watch and drool, but she knew better than to chase them.
 
Growing up on the farm the dog could be trained to leave them alone but if a hog develed the taste for chicken that was another matter.
If they have had their wing clipped and can no longer fly a 6 ft. fence should keep them safe at home except for the wild critters and cats.

The only advice I am able to offer when doing a project like yours is make sure it only has two doors. If it has four doors it becomes a chicken sedan.:)

Sorry havent been on in a while. It is work out pretty good, Thanks. I am thinking about doing an expansion though they look a little crowded now that they are full grown.
 
I am a new (french) member and I discover the content of your forum. It is very friendly and cool, people can talk about everything. I think it is impossible today to find a discussion about a chicken coop on a cars/trucks forum in France.
Several years ago there was a place named "Le cafe de Ferdinand" (in link with Ferdinand Porsche) on the VW air-cooled forum Flat4ever.com where members could have non VW air-cooled discussions but it was closed because there was always someone to say bad things and criticize what others were doing :)
Happy to discover another world, thank you, great chicken coop !
