Go ahead and take that new 900 CCA Walmart battery to a real parts store (not O'Rielys, Advance, Pep Boys, etc.) and have it tested. Then compare it to one of their new batteries of the same group size. The difference will be shocking. We've had several Walmart technicians get batteries from us because they refuse to buy a battery from the place they work.

Everstart batteries at Walmart are good a lot of different brand batteries are made by the same manufacture

You are correct, there are only 2 or 3 different actual battery manufacturer's still around. They just slap a different label on the outside for whomever they are building for that particular day.

If it never gets cold where your at, you might be able to get by with one battery. As far as the Everstart battery, we call them neverstart at work. I see more of them bad than good. I use a lot of A/C Delco batteries and they are made by the same company that makes them for my local Autovalue auto parts, but I see more go bad from the auto parts than Delcos. They can be made by the same company but to different standards.

This is what I really meant and should have said in my previous post. Although there are only a couple of manufacturer's around, they build the batteries to the spec of the company that ordered them and then slap the proper label on for that company.
Same as with major appliances, Whirlpool makes a large number of different company's washers/dryer's/refrigerators but specs them accordingly and then puts that company's name on the washer/dryer/refrigerator. Same happens with batteries.
It says on the side “3 year free replacement” I’ll see if that is correct. I normally get my batteries at the junk yards but Mopars are hard to find with the plus terminal on the left. They’ll last 3-4 years for $35 + core. I haven’t bought a new battery in 20 years, about the time price went through the roof.

I'm running a single 840 'marine' cranking amps in my 97 diesel. It's doing fine but yeah, in cold temps, the starter is slow. After all, what compression does a 97 diesel engine have and they don't like cold weather? Something like 17 to 1? I don't drive it much but, bought a group 27 battery from a place that 'refurbs' them for my Dakotas. Have one in my 96 Dakota that I bought for 55 over 2 years ago and got another for my 95 after my freebie battery gave up the ghost after 5 years and was dead when I got it. It surprised me that they are still selling them for 55 bucks but going to a scrap yard sounds interesting too. Been awhile since going to one too.

Yes, both trucks need two batteries. Diesel engines need more power to start, especially in cold weather. One battery might not be enough. If one battery is weak, it can make starting harder.
A 900 CCA battery is good, but you still need two. Make sure both batteries match in size and power so they last longer. Walmart batteries work, but some brands last longer.

The 840 CCA marine battery was the biggest I could find locally. The Walmart batteries (900's) didn't last as long as the Delco's did. Usually when the batteries in the diesel start getting a bit weak, they work for a good while in a V6 Dakota lol. Also have been having good results buying 'refurbished' batteries. Bought my second one (900 CCA) a few weeks ago and the 1st one has been going fine for nearly 3 years now. Might get a couple for the diesel and see how it goes. They are 65 bucks each and was 65 bucks almost 3 years ago.
