Oil pan removal on '79 4x4?

Is it possible to take the oil pan off a small block with the engine still in the truck? I had a look at mine and I could drop the pan straight down about 4 inches....would that be enough to be able to take the pan off?

Is your pan a rear sump one? If you have to you can hoist the engine a little higher also for additional clearance.

Yes, I believe it's a rear sump....

You should be able to drop it enough to clear the crank. I have an engine hoist that I can hook up to the heads and loosen the bolt in the spool mounts and hoist it up higher.

I have done this in my 79 w100 you have to loosen the right side motor mount and remove rear angle bracket to drop the pan
