Very nice looking truck. Could be your brake hose collapsing on the inside when the brake pedal is released it will still hold pressure to the caliper I have seen it happen a few times

There is a couple plastic tabs on the shaft and they can be pressed back by collapsing the shaft like in a accident. I would just unbolt the steering column then put the box in place then reinstall the column best way

VIN number on my 68 is stamped on the right side of the frame just behind the axle on the outside alomst to where the frame goes under the cab. So, if you turn the wheel, you should be able to see it.... after you scrape the dirt off.
