General Information

This is my Hot Rod Dodge Truck 1500-R

It's a very basic truck, no power windows or door locks, no cruise, no tilt (wish it had that for my belly ! ), but the A/C blows cold and that's a good thing.

I love the 5 speed manual. It has duals out the back but no mufflers so it sounds like a Rod and you can hear me coming from a long way away.

Pro's ... it's a work truck so there's no thoughts about scratches and I love driving it.

Con's ... it has hail damage on the hood and roof from years gone by and paint / clearcoat cracked so the paint is flaking off which doesn't bother me but the wife hates it :). Drivers door hinge is bad and has some cancer in the lower door skin ... that bothers me so I'd like to find another door. Also has a pin hole leak in the water pump housing where is seals .. not a biggy as it doesn't loose much fluid at all except when parked after driving it and getting it up to temp that needs to be addressed one of these days. Could use a new set of tires too.

I plan to keep it as it's very useful around the my hometown and hauling stuff and just tooling running around and running through the gears when I'm back at the old homestead

I'd love to find a white hood, drivers fender, body color grill surround, and drivers door to replace the bad ones on it ... especially the hood and door so if you are in my area - STL Metro or Salem, IL / Southern IL area and have some you would like get sell or trade let me know. I would take other colors and maybe get the thing or the panels painted.

Maybe a new drivers seat as the current one is ripped up from sliding in and out. Forgot I also need a passenger mirror .. can't get it to stay put and I have to adjust it every time I drive it.

I may also get the local interior guy to replace/recover the headliner one of these days.

I'd also like to replace the carpet with a rubber mat but don't know if that was an option during these years. I know it's not good as it can cause rust but I always thought trucks with rubber mats were cool and were work-truck-like. We had rubber mats in the 70's Dodge 6 Pack trucks I used to drive in the Air Force ... easy to clean up no matter how dirty you get in it.

If I ever paint this I don't mind white but would be thinking of changing the chrome grill frame to body color, and painting the black/gray bumper parts body colored. If I ever get the whole thing painted (doubtful) I'd consider Red, intense blue like the Durango, Hemi Orange, Petty Blue, O.D. Green, 69 Plymouth A4 Platinum, or .... Limelight :)

Question for those more knowledgeable than I - are the wheels on it an original option or standard for this year? If not what years are they for? I like them but the size seems to be getting less and less produced.

I like your truck @tallhair :) The 5-speed could get a little tiring in stop n go traffic, but they are much less expensive to repair....
Thanks brother ... I love it but I don't drive it in big cities much :)

It's fun in my rural area and even around smaller big towns. I drove it to work at a DoD installation for several years and most days it took about 15 or 20 minutes of stop and go to get into the base .. I'd just let the line move a little more than normal then ease up on the clutch and then wait :)

Great truck tallhair. Always liked those Blue Durango's too.
Cheers Riverdawg .. me too on the blue dodges

I don't know why but compared to other colors for similar years I never seen that many of the blue ones. I was in San Antonio when I bought it and it was tough to find that color down there at that time and I bought it new. I've seen more up here in IL but not really that many and they are getting scarcer all the time whatever the color.

I've been looking at pictures to decide what I want to do to the truck as far as either painting it or looking for replacement body parts that are already white panels and replacements for few odds and ends I'd like to address.

I did find some sources for rubber vinyl floor to replace the dirty / stained carpet, a possible neat plastic replacement panel for the drooping headliner, the pass mirror that won't stay in one place, a cable to replace the missing one on the tailgate, and a few other things. I 'also found a 96 FSM so that's handy.

Here's a pic of the vinyl floor mat. They come in black and grey ... I'll be going with grey probably to match the light gray vinyl seat interior.

headliner replacement .. pricey though .. also visors

i'll probably not do the shelf though

I'm going to look for other sources for these items .. I do like the headliner deal but not for that price. I can have the existing one recovered for probably less than $100. Maybe I can get it done in vinyl or another materiel than the stock replacement stuff.

I'm also trying to learn about what years body parts are the same as the 96 for instance instead of replacing the 96 mirror with a 96/97 mirror I'm wondering if the 98 mirrors will bolt on.

Also trying to see what years front body colored bumper fascia and grill will work on a 96 .. anyone know ??

Nice truck Bryan doesent look as if it needs much work ,,Apart from some paint work ,And that floor shift is rare ,It's usually on the colum change

Cheers Alex,

It is a solid truck and loads of fun .. hail damage cracked the clear coat and it pealed off. Has a few low dollar fixes it needs but otherwise is really in good shape and I love driving it. I'm thinking of getting is spruced up and going back to daily driving it. Wife doesn't like the way it looks so I'm thinking of taking care of that so she's happy with it being parked in front of the house. She keeps telling me to buy a new truck but I'd rather drive this one!

Feedback, encouragement, and sharing knowledge are allowed people LOL :) I could use some help because this is new territory for me.

I'm fired up to get this truck looking good and daily driving it but could use some feedback. Especially about what parts fit / are required for me to convert to the body colored front end. I may just replace the hood, drivers fender and door but while I'm at it I'd like to convert the appearance while I'm at it if I can get some parts. If not I'll just replace the hail damaged parts but sure would be a good time to to do both.

I'm thinking I like the 98 up Sport front end, grill and bumper. As far as I can tell I can use 94 - 01 hood and fenders with 98 and ? later body colored grill and bumper and am thinking I'll need 98 and up head lights for the 98 and up bumper/grill (mine are pretty hazy anyway). Am I wrong about any of this? I'm definitely not anywhere near well versed on these trucks

Anything else I need to convert and look for, or need to know while looking for part ???

Maybe it would be best to find a whole front end from a 98 and up but that sound harder and more expensive If I don't need all of it ? I don't know where my stopping point is for years exactly on what will interchange or what is required to swap.

Talked to the local interior guy yesterday and he said he could make me a new seat cover to match but I found this today

Mine are all vinyl no materiel .. and you can get all vinyl for $229 with free shipping for the set. I'll have the interior guy put them on. He's gonna do my overhead molded headliner too.

So apparently no one likes my truck :(
Well.. I actually dig it, but I think the 94 to 97 were the best. When the 98 came out, I hated the plastic mirrors and the integrated seatbelt, not to mention the passenger airbag. Good luck with your truck man

OK I had the wrong idea on the headliner .. the one I posted below is a plastic formed headliner covered in the original material .. not what I thought it was and it's way too much for this truck and my pocket book

This is also to much but appears to be a color formed plastic headliner ... still to much though

Price: $280.37 & FREE Shipping.

I like the look of the truck...even with the patches of paint missing. Sometimes I wonder if it's worth having a nice vehicle when most other road users have little or no appreciation for your pride & joy. Not having to worry about nicks and scratches at the supermarket must be a great feeling. ;)
Just curious as to why you have different licence plates on front & rear? That'll keep the cops on their toes. :D

Thanks Kiwi and yes I love it. It's a blast to Hot Rod around in and I use it for hauling parts back and forth, hauling limbs and brush to the dump, hauled a ridiculous amout of dirt one day (never do that again ! ), and whatever. It's a work truck but is fun to drive with the 5 gear and dual straight pipes and I don't have to worry about damamaging it LOL. It's actually very straight and solid outside of the paint on the cab roof, hood, fender, and door.

Yep for when I'm rodding it up LOL. Actually I replaced the plates when it got transferred from Dad's name to my name and I guess I forgot to change the front plate. It's only been 7 or 8 years Hahahaha ... I'll get around to it.
